Change management and resiliency for change

Life and work-life can feel overwhelming at times. Everyday challenges often come with little or no-advance warning. Boring commutes, long work hours, tight deadlines and constantly increasing demands cause us to have to pivot endlessly. During these nerve-wracking moments, the ability to maintain a good attitude and have some level of optimism while these stressors weigh us down, can be very hard if not seem impossible.

In his dynamic workshop, Buck Davis draws from evidence-based research on positive emotions and resiliency while sharing his own insights as to how to remain centered and retain perspective, even when anxiety, burnout, cynicism, self-doubt and exhaustion threaten to turn motivation on its ear. Through the use of interactive group activities, multi-media visuals, engaging lecture and storytelling, he delivers a practical and compelling message with insights that can be implemented immediately. Audience members will leave feeling inspired, empowered and reinvigorated — ready to manage the chaos that gets in the way of bringing their most authentic and brilliant selves to work.

You’ll laugh, you’ll think, you’ll weigh in, you’ll collaborate, and you’ll most assuredly be moved. By the end of his talk, you’ll walk away with a variety of tools and strategies that you can implement right away to become more unabashedly resilient and courageously motivated to complete each day with newfound energy and focus. They say that showing up is half the battle, but at the end of the day you’ll be spurred to do much more than just show up. You’ll have the knowledge, insight and ability be a more capable and effective leader who is up to the tasks and challenges that await you in your very important role.

 Key Lessons
- A Critical Connection. The relationship between positive psychology and resilience.
- Mitigating the tendency to DWELL on stressful situations.
- Learning how to pivot with positivity.
- Gaining skills on how to speak to yourself when the hard stuff hits.
- Understanding the importance of prioritizing positivity to buffer for change.

Real World Learning: What Does this Mean? Where Do I Start? How Do I Improve?

It is time to rethink education on a wider scale and invite our communities to be a key center for students to learn outside of school. Real World Learning comes in many forms (internships, certification programs, college classes, and
more!). RWL makes learning more personal, and meaningful and gives students the purpose and relevance they need to succeed after high school. RWL allows for equitable access to college and careers.

In this session, about half the time will focus on the many, MANY logistics of an internship program that you might not know you need to plan for (workers comp insurance, transportation, student education, staff roles, family and community buy-in, data, and evaluation, etc.).

The second half will include students sharing their experiences, and an overview of processes and systems around concurrent enrollment, license, and certification programs, and exploration learning for students who haven't found their "thing" quite yet.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Shared systems and processes
2. Student/Alumni experience
3. Share resources and forms
4. Shared tools to have conversations around shifting paradigms

Theater for EVERY Classroom
Bring the magic of theatre into your classroom by embracing your teacher persona and taking ownership of your stage (classroom) and show (lesson plans)!
In this session, attendees will see how educators can break down lessons and units utilizing the questions directors and designers use when preparing a staged production, and build up engaging and unique educational experiences for scholars through implementing theatrical elements of a stage production.
Studies have shown that integrated theatre arts programming makes a significant impact on young scholars by improving their literacy and math skills, while increasing opportunities for students to develop stronger connections with their peers, closing the social-emotional learning gap caused by the global shutdown.
This process encourages educators to acknowledge the multitude of similarities between a teacher and their classroom and a performer and a stage. This practice can be used by teachers of any grade level in all content areas.

As teachers, we are frequently told to fit into a predefined "mold," adhering to certain standards and practices. However, the key to creating an impactful and fulfilling teaching experience lies in embracing authenticity and cultivating your individual teaching style.

In this session we will: challenge traditional teaching paradigms, increase self-reflection and awareness, and discuss ways to overcome the challenges as we cultivate our unique teaching styles.

Research Roundtables

Join us for an engaging session designed to foster collaborative dialogue and idea-sharing among educators passionate about enhancing teaching practices. Our roundtable discussions provide a dynamic forum where small groups delve into significant topics and practical issues facing educators today.

Each roundtable session will offer Multiple options per room, with one topic per table. Each topic will be shared and discussed 3 times during the hour in 20-minute increments. After each 20-minute time block, attendees are encouraged to move to another table to learn about a new topic.

Roundtable Topics:
  1. The Art of Implementing Well: This session aims to equip leaders with the necessary tools and tactical skills to strategically implement different initiatives or requirements that are mandated.  We will identify common pitfalls, implementation practices educators should try from other industries, and 3 key dimensions of change to ensure that all students can have high-quality learning experiences.
  2. Parent Communication - A Radical Approach: This session will present several "radical" techniques that I have successfully used to build stronger relationships with parents.
  3. Closing the Instructional Equity Gap: In this presentation, Dr. Mel and K-5 classroom teachers will partner together to address the pressing need for equitable and mindset-based learning environments to counter educational disparities and nurture the emotional well-being of diverse student populations.  They will unpack their journey of building willingness and readiness with elementary school teachers and how they have implemented responsive teaching practices that align with the integration of information processing in the brain (memory, emotions, and executive functioning), SEL development for both the adults and chidlren, and the challenges teachers face implementing innovative methodologies to engage culturally diverse students holistically. Come and learn mindset+pedagogical tools that honor the cultural funds of knowledge every student brings into the learning space.
  4. Tools for Planning and Executing Change: Perhaps there is another way! There are some great tools to implement change in methodical, bite-sized chunks. If there is a will and willingness, and a little bit of grace and flexibility on the part of all stakeholders, it is absolutely possible to make big changes move a bit quicker.
  5. Inclusion Excellence: The session aims to inspire and engage education stakeholders in the importance of inclusion.  Participants will gain firsthand experience of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

Participants will have the opportunity to exchange innovative ideas, share lesson plans, discuss ongoing research, and seek valuable feedback from peers in a supportive and collaborative atmosphere. Whether you're seeking inspiration, looking to refine your teaching methods, or eager to contribute to the collective knowledge of the educational community, this session promises insightful conversations and meaningful connections.

Awards Dinner
Join us as we celebrate innovation in Arkansas Schools by recognizing the work, dedication, and transformation happening in Arkansas' Schools of Innovation! Arkansas law describes a School of Innovation (SOI) as one that ‘transforms teaching and learning,’ and defines innovation as ‘a new or creative alternative to the existing instructional and administrative practices.’ Schools of Innovation work with staff, students, parents, and community through a rigorous application phase of planning and learning, to design their School of Innovation. Once their application is approved, schools begin implementation via a designation phase and later enter a renewal phase, with a commitment to continuous improvement within their communities.

Schools of Innovation in Arkansas have been celebrated for:
• Being a School that “Works for All”,
• Transforming Learning to Emphasize 21st Century Skills for the Future,
• Increasing Ownership for Students and Their Learning, and
• Intentional Relationship Building and more.

During this celebration, DESE and OIE will recognize schools along this path of transformation, and we invite you to join us in this celebration!

Morning Keynote: Teacher-Student Collaboration
Engaging young people in their learning is becoming more and more difficult. There are so many influences competing for their attention. Involvement in peer-group activities, preoccupations with social media, and commitments outside school are the distractions most frequently mentioned in the research. One way to improve the situation is through teacher-student collaboration which in turn, tends to be based upon questioning. However, the most common way to question students (Initiate-Respond-Evaluate) often reduces engagement and interest! During his presentation, James will give an insight into the research and offer some better ways forward.

Innovate, Iterate, Elevate: Leadership Strategies for Continuous Improvement
In this session we will explore the dynamic role of leaders in fostering organizational growth and resilience through:
  • Innovation: Initiating transformative changes and fostering a culture of creativity and forward-thinking.
  • Iteration: Embracing failure as a learning opportunity, encouraging experimentation, and prioritizing iterative progress over perfection.
  • Elevation: Cultivating an environment that responds effectively to change and evolving challenges.

In today's rapidly evolving school landscape, effective leadership is crucial for organizations striving for continuous improvement. This abstract explores key leadership strategies that empower teams to adapt, evolve, and excel, including:
  • Promoting a Growth Mindset: Encouraging team members to see challenges as opportunities for growth, fostering an environment where individuals can explore new ideas, take calculated risks, and learn from both successes and failures.
  • Leveraging Diverse Perspectives: Fostering collaboration across teams, breaking down silos for better idea generation, and empowering employees at all levels to contribute to the innovation process.

The synthesis of these strategies forms a holistic approach to leadership for continuous improvement, emphasizing their interconnectedness and collective impact on organizational resilience and sustained excellence.

Ultimately, innovative leadership requires a proactive approach that goes beyond conventional practices, challenges the status quo, and embraces change as a catalyst for growth. By adopting these principles, leaders can position their organizations for long-term success in an ever-evolving landscape.

Creating a culture of success & overcoming Adversity

During the last three years at Wynne High School, we have worked to develop a Culture of Success for students and teachers.  We worked to submit our SOI application in year 1 and during Year 2 we were moving in the right direction and seeing success as we moved toward designation.  Then on March 31, 2023, our entire world was rocked by an EF3 Tornado that destroyed the town and left our school in ruins.  We had to shift our focus on recovery and how not only to finish the school year but also create a plan for this year and at the same time continue to be successful.  Through the hard work and dedication of our staff, administration, students, and support staff we not only finished the 2022-23 school year but we did not miss any activities and we saw gains despite all the obstacles.  We started the 2023-24 school year on two campuses and during the week before Labor Day moved into our new Temporary campus where we continued to see a thriving culture and gains.  We can share our story as a story of hope but also how all of this would have been impossible without a strong culture, supportive parents, passionate teachers, and strong-willed students who all have pride in Wynne High School.

Credit-Less Diploma? How Competencies Bring Equity and Access for All Students

New Legacy Charter School has maintained a deep commitment to personalized and career-connected learning for all of its learners, including requiring meaningful real-world learning experiences. As the first high school in Colorado to utilize a competency-based transcript, NLCS is paving the way for at-risk youth to graduate and have a college or career path already begun. Sara and her team have spent the past four years transitioning the curriculum and program for NLCS, under the Big Picture Learning model, to help teen parents, and at-risk youth, graduate with a college or career path already begun.

Finding the balance between learning, assessment, and graduation guidelines can be student-centered and personal for every child. Learn how New Legacy Charter School shifted away from credits to a complete competency-based transcript and diploma program that is making graduation accessible to all. Deeper learning and rigor need not be sacrificed to provide interest-driven learning and remove the barrier of credit recovery that causes the most high-risk students to drop out and give up.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Shared systems and processes
2. Student/Alumni experience
3. Shared resources and forms
4. Shared tools to have conversations around shifting paradigms

Embracing Inclusive Education for Students with Disabilities: Flexibility and Outside-the-Box Thinking
Join us for an engaging presentation that explores the dynamic intersection of inclusive education for students with disabilities, flexibility, and outside-the-box thinking. In today's classrooms, creating an environment where every learner feels valued, supported, and empowered is crucial for their success.
Traditional educational approaches can sometimes hinder creativity and restrict potential. That's why we'll be advocating for a paradigm shift toward embracing unconventional methods and fostering a culture of curiosity and innovation in the classroom for students with disabilities.
Through this presentation, we'll delve into:
1. The Transformative Power of Inclusive Education for Students with Disabilities: We'll examine how inclusive practices can positively impact student learning outcomes and foster a sense of belonging among diverse learners.
2. Flexibility in Teaching and Learning: Discover how flexibility in curriculum design, instructional strategies, and assessment methods can cater to individual learning needs and promote student engagement.
3. Outside-the-Box Thinking: Explore the importance of challenging traditional norms and encouraging educators to think creatively, fostering interdisciplinary connections, and unleashing the full potential of students with disabilities.

Student-Student Collaboration with James Nottingham

Collaboration ought to be the foundation of learning but too often, classroom talk is dominated by the teacher. At its best, high-quality dialogue creates interaction and engagement with learning, providing opportunities for students to move from surface-level knowledge to deeper understanding. Hattie reported that effective dialogue can double the average rate of learning; as a pedagogical tool, exploratory talk is one of the most effective ways to create challenge, wonder, inquiry and critical thinking. In this breakout session, James will cover ways to improve the quality of student collaboration, build students’ reasoning skills, encourage students to take ownership of their learning, and enhance higher-order thinking skills.
